The Milkman's Apprentice
The Milkman's Apprentice, or The Pendulous Arbiter
Eb
If you were a milkman
Fm
And I was your apprentice
Ab Abm
You could teach me everything
Eb
And ask for my advice
Ab
Such as: am I making too much noise
Bb. Eb
Delivering the milk
And I would answer "maybe so"
That way I could be your guide
but then again, after all
Who am I to say
In the end it's up to you
To decide
If I were a gardener
Working in your garden
You could ask me what I like
Geraniums or lilies
And I would lean upon some tool
And speak my mind
And I would answer "lilies" then
If I'm to be the arbiter
But the scent of them I can't abide
And who am I to say
In the end it's up to you
To decide
You can ask me anything
And I will answer yes
And no as well, for who can tell
What is right and proper
And what is not, oh woe betide
anyone who seeks my advice
I will tend to disagree
When something is implied
But also not too strongly
And maybe not at all
So in the end I won't decide
Anything at all
